The United States Department of Labor, which administers the Federal Black Lung Benefits program, recently announced a 1.4% increase to the monthly benefits paid to disabled coal miners. For 2018, the monthly benefits are as follows:
*Single miner or widow, with no dependent children: $660.10
*Married miner with no dependent children, or widow with 1 dependent child: $990.10
*Married miner with 1 dependent child: $1,155.10
*Married miner with 2 or more dependent children: $1,320.00
There may be a decrease in these amounts for a miner who is receiving workers’ compensation benefits, and the receipt of Black Lung benefits can decrease the amount of Social Security Disability benefits. Disabled miners are also entitled to receive medical benefits relating to their lung disease.
